Dusk burrowed his face deeper into his folded wing and groaned. The sun had almost set, but he still wanted to sleep. He closed his eyes and let his mind wander, but with no luck. Sleep had already deserted him. He sighed and unfolded his wings, breifly stretching them before taking flight. Inside the cave it was pitch black, and he had to rely on his echo vision to see. He barked out a series of clicks and the returning echoes told him where the cave entrance was, and he streaked out of it into the grand canyon. The sky above still had a faint glow, but below all he could see was dark, and the deep canyon swallowed up his echoes, not one returned. He flew straight up, and was out of the canyon. He headed towards the trees that bordered it's cliff-side. He quickly voiced a few more clicks into the trees to see if they were being occupied by anything.

Dusk's returning clicks showed him that the trees were unnocupied. Satisfied, he glided towards the nearest one. It appeared to be some sort of coniferous pine tree, and he could smell it's sharp pine scent. That smell always reminded him of home, for his parents had lived inside a pine tree when he was just a newborn. Closer now, he prepared to land, he tucked in his wings slightly, and stretched out his claws to grasp the gnarled bark of the old tree. Once he felt the bark under his claws, he folded his wings and swung upside down. He smirked slightly, since he'd been on his own he had practiced his landings, and could now do them with perfection. He quickly sweeped his echo-vision around the nearby trees to double check if anything was nearby, and luckily, the trees all appeared to be unnocupied. He sighed, he missed the company of other bats, and the only other bats nearby belonged to a large colony of free-tailed bats. They seemed to dislike him, and he had not yet seen another spotted bat like himself. He sat there for another moment or two, before deciding to begin hunting. Like other spotted bats, his diet consisted mainly of moths, mosquitos, other flying bugs, and caterpillars. A large moth fluttered past his nose, and he launched himself off the branch in pursuit.
