Rasputin quickly cracked open the shell of a sunflower seed and ate the small prize inside. He savoured it's flavour, as he loved sunflower seeds. He was thankful that they grew abundantly here, unlike further west in the Rockies, from where he had originated. He looked out from his perch and noted that the sun had nearly set, it's last dying rays cast a strangely peaceful light over the other trees around him. He was perched on the second branch off the ground, in a large deciduous tree that he believed to be a maple. He paused to look at the large leaves of this tree, and studied the pattern in which it's veins ran outwards from it's stem towards the edge of the leaf. He kept his ears open wide, carefully listening for sounds that would betray a predator. Such as a cat rustling leaves below, or the ruffle of a hawks feathers. So far he heard not a sound, and trained his eyes upward onto the now-black sky. The first stars were just beginning to appear, and he could see the Northern star marking the way north in the sky. He quickly memorized it's position, and set off. He ran nimbly along the slender branch of the maple tree, it narrowed dangerously toward it's tip. Just before it ended, it met up with the branch of another tree. He carefully hopped onto it, and dug in his claws as it swayed precariously. Without looking down, he continued onwards, unknowing of where he was heading. All he knew was he craved the sharp icy winds of the north, and the wide open skies of the plains.
