This year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona was canceled on February 12 , when the coronavirus threat still seemed remote in Spain. Just one month later, the Government declared a state of alarm and the population was confined for months. One of the largest telephone and technology events in the world will return to Barcelona during the first days of March 2021. And Pedro Sánchez's Executive is already looking to the future. At the end of June, the Council of Ministers approved a new agreement with the GSMA , the entity that organizes the MWC, by which the technology fair would remain in Spain for another year—until 2024— in exchange for advantageous conditions. Now, the Government itself is facing the organization of the event for next year.
Through the Public Procurement Platform, Red.es, a public entity attached to the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, has published two tenders. The first, valued at 495,000 euros , is to contract the service of "creation and comprehensive management of the Spanish pavilion at MWC Barcelona 2021 and associated services." The second, whose estimated value C Level Contact List amounts to 86,400 euros , will hire "the organization of the networking cocktail" of said Pavilion. This Monday's BOE publishes the tender notices whose technical specifications, which Business Insider Spain has accessed , can now be consulted on the Public Procurement Platform. Perhaps the most striking thing is that, among all the prescriptions and technical requirements that these specifications contemplate, there is not a single mention of the coronavirus. In the introduction to the pavilion tender, it is mentioned, for example, that the last edition of the MWC was held in 2019.
Regarding the requirements that the catering service will have, for example, it is proposed to take "into account" the "necessary adaptations" to adjust the service to the legislation in force at that time, due to the "scenario introduced by COVID-19". Regarding the networking cocktail prior to MWC 2021, this will have to be held in a "unique" building.
